|Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Bacterial Evolution|
|Department of Zoology, Oxford, OX2 6GG|
|Grade 7 – £31,604 – £38,833 p.a.|
|A two-year postdoctoral position is available in the MacLean lab at the University of Oxford, Department of Zoology, to work on the evolution of an important bacterial pathogen, P. aeruginosa, during short-term acute infections.
To accomplish this goal, the postholder will use large scale lab assays and extensive whole genome sequencing to characterise a collection of longitudinal samples of P. aeruginosa that have been collected from patients in hospitals across Europe. Specifically, the postholder will use large scale assays to measure fitness, antibiotic resistance and mutation rate in the clinical isolates, and analyse Illumina and Nanopore sequence data from the isolates. Using this approach, we will address a range of novel and important questions that are at the interface of evolutionary biology and medicine:
(i) Do bacterial populations evolve during short-term infections? If so, can we identify key evolutionary routes involved in the transition from environmental bacteria to pathogens?
This post is ideally suited to researchers who have experience in both bacterial genomics and experimental microbiology, but applicants who only have experience in genomics are also welcome. The postholder will be given the opportunity to contribute to the development and direction of this project, and these positions are ideally suited for ambitious researchers with good team-work and leadership skills. The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree (or near completion) in a relevant subject area.
